How Do Burwin Courses Work?

All courses are ongoing and may be started anytime and from anywhere. Quality combined with portability have always been the hallmark of Burwin courses.

Burwin home study courses are completely theoretical. We do not organize or administer clinical placements.

Courses are mailed as registrations are received Monday to Friday. Registrations received on Saturday or Sunday are mailed on Monday. Courses shipped to addresses in North America are mailed by expedited mail and courses mailed outside North America are sent by airmail.

Burwin issues an official course certificate when a course is successfully completed. Burwin courses are approved for continuing medical education (CME) credits by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound (SDMS), Dallas, TX (www.sdms.org). SDMS approved courses are accepted for their membership by many professional credentialing bodies including the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), Sonography Canada (SC ), Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU), American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), the State of Florida Department of Health and Rehabilatative Services, Office of Radiation Control, and the State of California Board of Registered Nurses.

Our courses are generally too voluminous to be effective for only online study however module assignments may be completed and submitted online. Course materials are printed and mailed to students and digital images and videos are downloaded online. Course duration is approximately four months however students may work at their own pace. Students are given a module assignment schedule as a guideline. Two or more courses may be taken simultaneously. If course load is too demanding, a course can be postponed to a later date. Students have one year from the official course registration date to complete a course without further fees.

All our courses are authored by experienced SONOGRAPHY CANADA (www.sonographycanada.ca) and/or ARDMS (www.ardms.org) sonographers with extensive clinical and teaching experience. Student questions are answered promptly via email or fax.

Most courses are organized into three or four modules with each module ending with an assignment consisting mainly of multiple choice questions. Module assignments are “open book” format (eg, with the aid of study materials). Module assignments may be submitted online, by fax, or by mail. Our online student site is referred to as the BOSS (Burwin Online Student System) and is accessed with a user ID and password via Student Login located on every page of our website. With the BOSS, students can view their course registration record, submit address and other personal changes, submit examination invigilator details, and complete module assignments and the final examination online for immediate results and feedback.

Students have the option of also taking a final examination in each course after all course module assignments have been completed and passed. The final examination may be taken online. The final examination is “closed book” format (no study materials allowed) and administered by an invigilator. The final examination consists of 100 or more multiple choice style questions aimed at preparing students for the registry examination.

Students receive a CME certificate issued by the SDMS if they complete the course module assignments and obtain a passing grade of 75% or higher in each module assignment. To receive a Burwin Course Certificate, students must also take the final examination and obtain a course mark of 70% or higher (module assignments are worth 30% of the final course mark and the final examination is worth 70%). For two-part courses (eg, Abdomen, Adult Echocardography, Neurosonology), a Burwin Course Certificate is issued when both courses are completed and passed.
